Events and the event log

The Events screen has two tabs: Event manager (what Whence counts and what each event is worth) and Event log (every event, newest first, with the visit that carried it). Find it under Conversion > Events in Advanced view. In Simple view, open it with Cmd+K (or Ctrl+K). It needs the Session replays permission.

Event manager

All events lists each event with its Type, Value, count over the Last 7 days and Last seen. There are three kinds:

  • Shopify: sent by the Shopify pixel, such as Added to cart, Checkout started, Payment info entered and Purchase.
  • Automatic: seen by the Whence tracker on its own, such as Page view and Add to cart (tracker).
  • Custom: the ones you declare.

Click an event to open it. You can:

  • mark it Primary conversion (the one goal that matters most; only one event can be primary), Secondary conversion (a goal worth tracking on its own, like a newsletter signup) or Key event (highlighted in visits and in the event log);
  • give it a Value (USD): what one occurrence is worth to you, used to put a dollar figure on funnels and conversions. A purchase has no fixed value, since each order carries its own amount;
  • write a Description for the rest of the team.

Changing an event needs the Store settings permission. Setting a value also needs Revenue & orders. Without them, the fields stay visible with a lock.

Declare your own event

Step 1: Click + New event

Give it a name, for example Newsletter signup. Letters, numbers, spaces and . _ : - only.

Step 2: Choose when it fires

  • Page visited: a page address starting with /. Use * for any text, like /pages/thank-*. It fires on every visit to that page.
  • Element clicked: a CSS selector, like #buy-now or .newsletter button. In Chrome, right-click the element, choose Inspect, then copy its id or a class. It fires on every click on it.
  • API call: your own code sends it. The event shows a line to copy, for example window.whence.track('Newsletter signup', { plan: 'pro', value: 49 });. A number under value is that occurrence’s worth in dollars.

Step 3: Click Create event

Whence counts it from now on. Past visits are not recounted. A store holds up to 200 events.

Event log

The Event log tab lists every event, newest first, 50 per page, with the visitor, the visit number, the page and the value. Click a row to watch the visit behind it.

  • Search events, pages, visitors narrows the list as you type.
  • Filters narrows by Event name, Origin, Source, Device, Country, UTM, Entry page, Exit page, duration and visit number. Pick a period and a segment too.
  • Export CSV downloads up to the 2,000 most recent matching events. Purchase amounts show Hidden without the Revenue & orders permission, on screen and in the file.

Events you declare can be used as funnel steps (Funnels), in segments and filters (People), in alerts and email reports (Reports and alerts).

Messages you may see

  • A page event needs a path starting with /.
  • A click event needs a CSS selector.
  • Too many events: 200 per store.
  • Changing an event needs the Store settings permission. You can read it, not change it.
