Connect Reddit
Whence sends your store events to Reddit from the server, through the Conversions API. You copy three values in Reddit’s Events Manager, paste them in Whence, and send a test. Plan on about 5 minutes.
What Whence sends to Reddit
With your visitor’s marketing consent only, from the server, to your Reddit pixel:
- Checked by default: Product view (VIEW_CONTENT), Add to cart (ADD_TO_CART) and Purchase (PURCHASE), with value, currency and products.
- Unchecked by default: Page view (PAGE_VISIT), Checkout started and Payment info. Reddit has no standard checkout or payment info event, so these two go out as custom events, which Reddit does not use to optimize.
- Matching details: hashed email, phone and visitor ID; IP address and browser; Reddit’s ad click (rdt_cid) and browser ID (_rdt_uuid).
Each event carries a conversion ID, so Reddit counts it once when your Reddit pixel sends it too. See Deduplication.
Where to find your IDs in Reddit
Step 1: Copy your Pixel ID
In Reddit Ads, open Events Manager, then Configure data source, Conversions API and Set up manually. Click Copy to Clipboard next to the Pixel ID.
Step 2: Generate a conversion access token
In Events Manager > Conversions API, click Generate Access Token. Reddit shows it only once: copy it right away.
Step 3: Copy a test ID
Open Events Manager > Event Testing and copy the test ID shown there. You only need it to send tests.
Set it up in Whence
Step 4: Open Reddit in Conversions
Open Marketing > Conversions and click Set up (1) on the Reddit row.
Step 5: Paste your IDs and send a test
- Paste your Pixel ID (1).
- Paste your Conversion access token (2).
- Paste your Test ID, then click Save and send a test (3).
More options holds the pixel name, the events to send, Product ID sent, Test mode, and Whence also runs the Reddit pixel in the browser (browser pixel).
In Shopify admin, turn on the Reddit switch under Conversions sent to your ad platforms (click Show if it is not listed), fill in the same fields, click Save, then Send test event.
Test the connection
The test goes out with your test ID, so it shows in Reddit’s Event Testing and does not count. Whence shows Reddit’s answer after “Reddit received the test event. It answered: Reddit: …”.
Without a test ID, Whence does not send: “Add a Reddit test ID (Events Manager > Event Testing: copy the test ID) to send a test.” Test mode needs it too: “Test mode needs a Reddit test ID (Events Manager > Event Testing).”
Common errors
- “Pixel ID doesn’t look right. Check the format.” Copy it again with Copy to Clipboard.
- “Reddit: …”: Reddit’s message, with the name of any field it refused. A lost or wrong token shows as Problem: token refused. Since Reddit shows a token only once, generate a new one, click Fix, then Update the settings.
- “Reddit refuses events older than 7 days.” Rare, since Whence sends within hours.
- “Reddit: your sales may be counted twice.” Remove the Reddit pixel from your theme, Google Tag Manager or the app that installed it, or let Whence run the Reddit pixel in the browser.
Connecting Reddit in Setup > Connections reads your ad spend for the Ads screen. While the tile says Whence is waiting for Reddit to approve its Ads API access, spend is not available. Conversions work without it.
