Connect Taboola
Whence sends the sales that came from a Taboola ad to Taboola from the server. You copy two values in Taboola Realize, paste them in Whence, and check the setup. Plan on about 5 minutes.
What Whence sends to Taboola
With your visitor’s marketing consent only, from the server, to your Taboola account:
- Purchase only, under the conversion event name you give, with revenue, quantity and order ID.
- Only for visitors who arrived from a Taboola ad. Taboola adds a click ID (tblci) to its ad links, and it counts a sale only with that click ID. A sale without it is not sent (“Not sent: no key to match a person”).
- Currency: sent when Taboola accepts your store currency. Otherwise Whence leaves it out and Taboola uses your account’s currency.
Taboola asks for no key: it does not authenticate these conversions.
Where to find your IDs in Taboola
Step 1: Copy your Account ID
In Taboola Realize, the numeric account ID is shown under the account name, at the top left (for example 1234567). Copy it.
Step 2: Copy the conversion event name
Open Tracking and your purchase conversion (type EVENT). Copy its Event Name exactly as written (case-sensitive), not the Conversion Name.
Set it up in Whence
Step 3: Open Taboola in Conversions
Open Marketing > Conversions and click Set up (1) on the Taboola row.
Step 4: Paste your IDs and check the setup
- Paste your Account ID (1).
- Paste the Conversion event name (2), exactly as Realize shows it.
- Click Save and check (3).
In Shopify admin, turn on the Taboola switch under Conversions sent to your ad platforms (click Show if it is not listed), fill in the same fields, click Save, then Check the setup.
In Setup > Connections, the Taboola tile still shows Soon: set Taboola up in Conversions, as above.
Test the connection
Taboola has no test mode: every sale sent is real. Whence sends nothing when you check and only looks at your settings: “Settings look valid. Taboola has no test mode, so nothing was sent. To check the connection end to end, use Realize > Tracking > Conversions > Test Events > Server Events.” There is no Test mode option for this platform.
When a real sale goes out, Recent activity shows “Taboola received the conversion (Taboola does not confirm it was valid).” Taboola accepts every request without checking its values, so a wrong event name fails silently on Taboola’s side. Check it in Realize after the first sales.
Common errors
- “Account ID doesn’t look right. Check the format.” Numbers only.
- “Conversion event name is required.” Use the Event Name, not the Conversion Name.
- No sales in Realize, but “Sent” in Whence: the event name does not match Realize exactly (case counts), or the conversion is not of type EVENT.
- “Taboola answered HTTP …”: Taboola did not accept the request. Server errors are retried automatically.
Sales from visitors who did not come through a Taboola ad never reach Taboola. That is expected.
