Connect Sticky.io

Sticky.io calls Whence each time an order is approved. Whence stores it with your other orders, links it to the visit it came from, and sends the purchase to your active ad platforms, with the same consent rules as your Shopify orders.

What Whence receives

Sticky.io sends a postback: an address whose tokens Sticky.io fills with the order’s values. Whence reads:

  • the order ID, parent order ID, total, currency, status and date;
  • the email, phone, billing city, state, zip and country;
  • product names, SKUs, quantities and prices;
  • the visitor ID (from click_id), the test card flag, and the UTM source, medium and campaign.

Whence stores only orders with the status approved. A postback that carries an action (such as a refund or a void) is read and ignored. An upsell has its own order ID in Sticky.io, so it counts as one more sale. The same order sent twice is stored once.

In Whence

Step 1: Get your postback address

In Whence, open Setup > Connections, find Sticky.io under Checkouts and funnels, click Set up, then Create my webhook address. The window shows Your postback address, with its tokens: your secret address followed by every token Whence reads. Click Copy.

Keep it secret: anyone with this address can send orders to your store in Whence. Sticky.io does not sign its postbacks, so the secret part of the address is the proof. Paste it in Sticky.io only.

Step 2: Create a postback

In Sticky.io, open Settings, then Post Backs, then Actions and Create.

Step 3: Choose the trigger

Trigger type: Order Type, initial and subscription orders, status Approved. Make it global, or attach it to your campaigns.

Step 4: Paste the address

Method GET. Paste the full postback address in the Post Back Builder, tokens included. Do not remove or rename a token: Whence reads each one by its name.

Step 5: Carry the visitor ID

Your checkout must send the Whence visitor ID in the click_id field of the order: it comes back through the click_id token of the postback. The store script (below) adds whence_vid to links to your checkout.

Step 6: Avoid counting purchases twice

If your Sticky.io checkout already sends purchases to an ad platform with its own pixel, tick that platform under Does Sticky.io already send purchases to an ad platform? Whence will not send a second purchase there. See Deduplication with native pixels.

Step 7: Test it

Click Send a test order. Whence calls your own address the way Sticky.io would, so the test goes through the real chain. It is never stored.

  • “Test order received and read. It is not counted in your sales.” The window then shows Last test order with the date.
  • “Whence refused this address. Create a new one.” Click New address and paste the new one in Sticky.io.
  • “Whence could not read the test order.” or “The test did not go through. Try again in a moment.”

Orders paid with a Sticky.io test card are marked as tests: Whence reads them and does not count them. The tile stays on Waiting for first order until a real order arrives, then shows Connected with the number of orders received.

How an order finds its visit

Most reliable: the Whence visitor ID carried to your checkout. Otherwise, the same email or phone as a visit in the two hours before the order. Each order keeps which one was used. An order with no match still counts as a sale, without a visit.

For the visitor ID, type your Checkout domain in the window (for example checkout.example.com), copy the Script for your store, and paste it in your store theme after the Whence tracker. Links to your checkout then carry the visitor ID, once the visitor has consented. Your checkout then has to pass that value into click_id.

Errors you may see

When the last call could not be stored, the tile shows Error and the window says why:

  • “The last call from Sticky.io could not be read. Check that it sends JSON or form fields.”
  • “The last order from Sticky.io had no order ID. Check the field mapping.” Check that the order_id token is still in the address.
  • “The last order from Sticky.io had no readable amount. Check the field mapping.” Check the total token.

New address and Disconnect both stop the current address at once. Sticky.io’s calls are then refused until you paste a new address there. If you set Sticky.io up again after disconnecting, you get a new address.

Purchases go to your ad platforms only with marketing consent from the linked visit, as explained in The funnel Whence sends.
